Expectation Management: What's in a Tagline? - Devlog #7
Aloha, fellow adventurers!
Our most recent update is live, so we started discussing a few non-code-related things. (If you want a deep dive into the changes for this version, read all about it from our master of code, Satanas82, on release notes.)
We noticed our current description needs work. Most importantly, it wasn't setting the right expectation. So I thought I'd share our process to transform the old description into a tagline.
Our description reads:
"Hope is a point & click adventure focused on narrative. You are Agatha Hope, a Captain of the rebel movement: Cicadas. Through conversations, mini-games and puzzles, you will drive the story and uncover Hope's secrets. To escape from NexusCorp's oppressions, you need to steal their spaceship. To save humanity, you need to unite your crew."
Although, I feel we did a good enough job describing the world of Hope and why the game's story takes place. That turned out to be the main issue. It's too focused on the world before the game.
From a story point of view, as a player, I care most about what the story of the game is, I rather discover the past during gameplay.
Another issue I found is that the description made me think I would be in a heist full of action-packed moments. And, if you've played the Demo (available here for free), you'd know that Hope is not quite that. As a Point and Click adventure, there is some action but this is not an Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.
With that in mind, we needed to set the right expectations. We wanted two things:
- Properly convey what the story is.
- Highlight the actual player experience.
We wrote a couple of new pitches and shared them with people that know more than us (which isn't too hard to find) and that are actually involved in the industry. (Thank you Christina and Kate Corvus)
Among a lot of good feedback, they asked a really important question: Where is this description going to live?
I also want to recommend a video that helped me with this. Giving me the image below.
By this point, we had all the tools we needed and came up with this tagline:
Captain a disjointed crew of rebels aboard a stolen spaceship and uncover its secrets in this minimalist 2D point & click adventure.
Although we are really happy with it, that still doesn't fix the issue of the description. I guess we will have to share how that changes too. 😅
